Maintaining your garage door – Tips from the experts

0

Your garage door is the most frequently used entrance to your home. It goes up and down countless times as you come and go. All that opening and closing can take its toll on your garage door system. That’s why it’s important to properly maintain your garage door if you want it to operate smoothly for years to come. Look at the garage door itself, including the opening mechanism and hardware. Check for any sagging, loose, or damaged sections in the door. Also, examine the springs, rollers, hinges, cables, and tracks. Do you notice any excessive wear and tear or other issues? If so, it may be time to call a professional garage door installation company to make repairs and replacements. Regular inspections allow you to fix minor problems before they turn into major repairs.

Lubricate the moving parts

It’s important to keep your garage door parts lubricated to prevent squeaking and sticking. Use garage door lubricant spray or lithium grease to lubricate the rollers, bearings, hinges, pulleys, and tracks. It helps lubricate the system so your door moves smoothly and quietly when opening and closing. Avoid using regular household oils like WD-40, as they attract dirt and debris that will gum up the workings of your door.

Test the garage door balance

If your garage door doesn’t open or close properly, chances are the door is out of balance. You test this yourself. With the door closed, pull the emergency release cord to disconnect the opener from the door. Carefully lift the door about halfway up. If the door stays suspended in place, the springs are properly balanced. If the door falls or rises on its own, the springs need adjusting. Don’t attempt to adjust them yourself as they contain powerful torsion springs. Instead, call a professional garage door installation technician.

Replace the weather stripping

Look at the weather stripping around your garage door. Is it cracked, torn, or missing altogether? Damaged weather stripping can’t form a tight seal, allowing air drafts, bugs, dust, and moisture into your garage. Replace stripped, cracked, or missing weather stripping when you notice it to protect your garage from the elements. Check the bottom seal on the door itself as well as the seals on the door jambs. Use a sturdy caulk or sealant designed for garage doors installation services in burlington.

Replace the backup battery

Many garage door openers feature a battery backup system that engages when the power is out. It allows you to operate the door during an electricity outage. Test the backup battery every 6 months. Power down the garage door opener and unplug it. Try to open the door using the remote or wall button. If it works, the battery is fine. If not, it’s time to replace the battery with a fresh one. Don’t get caught off guard in a storm with a dead backup battery.
